Because we really like you, and so it is hard not to talk about your movies, because they are how we come to know about you. And they show how talented you are as well.

Made by a Woman

Text Box: (in my opinion)

It’s about time! I’ve only know about Li Ching for a few months, but so far there are no websites dedicated to her. Hard to imagine why, as she is no doubt one of the greatest actresses of the 60s and 70s. She makes the most adorable facial expressions and her huang mei diao dances show a natural talent! The aim of this website is to show Li Ching how much she is still loved by some of us. That number may be small but it is truly quality love!

Special thanks to Diane, Terence, Bernard, Amelia and other Li Ching fans!

About Li Ching

Li Ching was born Li Guo Ying on November 8, 1948 in Shanghai, China. When the communists arrived, her parents took Li Ching and immigrated to Hong Kong. The youngest among five brothers and four sisters, Li Ching grew up with her mother when her older siblings left home to start a family of their own.

Apparently, Li Ching has always loved acting and so at the age of 14, she persuaded her parents to allow her to

audition for the Shaw Brothers when she heard they were in the midst of recruiting new members. She was chosen along with 40 others from a group of around 2000 people who auditioned. Li Ching signed an eight-year contract with the Shaw Brothers. Her mother persuaded the producers of Shaw Brothers to give Li Ching a dancing role in The Dancing Millionairess. Li Ching and her mother seemed to be very close, and they lived together at the Shaw Brothers dormitory while Li Ching acted.

At the start of her career, she took on small roles in movies such as The Crimson Palm and The Story of Sue San. Her first leading role

was The Mermaid, which won her the Best Leading Actress Award at the 12th Asian Movie Festival in 1965, earning her the title of “Asian Movie Queen.” Not yet 17 at the time, she became known within the movie industry as “Baby Movie Queen.” However, because of her roles as a maid in movies before The Mermaid, such as in The West Chamber and The Female Prince, some had also nicknamed her “Maid Movie Queen.” As she stepped into her 20s, the nickname “Baby Movie Queen” stuck, and

frustrated, she asked reporters, “How am I like a baby?”

At the age of 30, Li Ching enjoyed world recognition. Despite her popularity, she lead a quiet and simple lifestyle, which aroused the curiosity of reporters, who wanted to know more about her. Li Ching answered them with a sweet smile, “The movie world is very complicated. I entered the movie industry at the age of 14, but I never stopped learning how to behave as a human being.”

Her career flourished until the late 70s. In the late 70s, for the sake of filming, she agreed to some explicit roles which according to her did not help her in her career. At the end of 1976, Li Ching ended her 13 years with the Shaw Brothers and became a freelance actress in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Li Ching announced of her retirement from the entertainment industry in 1983. In the 90s, however, she was in need of money and returned to the Shaw Brothers to make some films.

Rumors about Li Ching

There have been many rumors about Li Ching towards the latter part of her career, or so I have heard. Li Ching understandably weren’t too happy about them, as apparently she did sue some people who invaded her privacy.

At some point it seems she became addicted to gambling to the extent of having lost everything but it seems she is back on her feet now and happily living in Happy Valley, Hong Kong.

Finally...
